Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and affects more than 60 million people. The disease is characterized by the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which are the neurons that relay visual information from the retina to the brain. This proposal investigates whether a receptor protein called sigma-1 receptor (S1R) can protect RGCs from damage in an experimental model of glaucoma.
