Abstract
A prospective study was undertaken of 621 active duty personnel hospitalized for acute respiratory disease at Fort Gordon, Georgia, 26 November 1978 through 26 May 1979. The etiology of ARD was found in 40.9 per cent of patients. Influenza A (N1N1), adenovirus 7 and 21 and rubeola were the most commonly diagnosed agents. Ten per cent of all patients had pneumonia. The implications of ARD for units and medical centers as well as possible preventative measures are discussed.
