Advances in the management of primary and secondary Insomnia

Sleep is much like the 'canary in the coal mine' – when a patient is sleeping poorly, it often indicates an underlying health problem. Insomnia, regardless of whether it is primary insomnia or secondary (comorbid) insomnia, is undertreated – physicians may view insomnia as trivial, complicated to treat and fraught with potential complications. However, we know that insomnia is not trivial; it contributes to both poor quality of life and suicide risk in persons with comorbid psychiatric disorders. Treatment of insomnia leads to improved quality of life in persons with insomnia with comorbidities. These six chapters provide an overview on the causes, consequences and treatment of insomnia, and awareness of these issues will hopefully promote health and access to effective care for those suffering with primary or comorbid insomnia.
