Abstract
Besides vehement rejection of pig organs, infection risks, especially the risk of porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) transmission, represent the main hurdle for clinical introduction of xenotransplantation. Neither retrospective studies on patients nor small animal models mirror settings of clinical xenotransplantation very closely. For this reason, we have analysed the PERV infection risk in a pig-to-baboon xenotransplantation model after conditioning CyP immunosuppression, adsorption of anti-porcine antibodies and inactivation of complement.
