Abstract

Bibrachial palsy is a distinctly unusual pattern of muscular weakness. We have described a woman who had a slowly progressive clinical course, with profound bibrachial palsy and neurogenic respiratory failure, but neurologically normal lower extremities. Autopsy revealed encephalomyelitis and a small previously undetected oat cell carcinoma with inflammatory infiltration. The pathologic features are consistent with an autoimmune process.
