Abstract

The field of thyroid surgery has evolved considerably over the past 8-10 years. In addition to minimally invasive techniques, a number of remote-access options are now available to surgeons and patients. Careful evaluation of novel surgical techniques is required in order to confirm that the safety and thoroughness of surgery are not compromised. Two robotic remote-access techniques have emerged as viable alternatives to conventional surgery for selected patients. Potential complications unique to these approaches are described and strategies for preventing and managing these complications are provided. Remote-access thyroid surgery is appropriate for a narrow proportion of patients needing surgical intervention. The approaches are facilitated by the incorporation of robotic technology. Novel complications may occur, and measures should be taken to understand these complications, prevent them if possible and manage them expeditiously when they occur.
