Abstract

Recent data suggest that D-serine is the endogenousligand for the 'glycine' binding site of theN-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype ofglutamate receptor. This chapter reviews evidencethat this is the case, not only in brain, butalso in the retina. Information is provided documentingthe location of D-serine and serineracemase, in retinal Müller glial cells. The transportof D-serine by these cells is discussed. Newevidence demonstrating that D-serine and serineracemase are present in retinal neurons isprovided, along with data evaluating the effectsof excess D-serine on retinal neuronal viability.
