Abstract

Denitrification rates were measured in soil slurries obtained from poorly and well drained riparian soils. Nitrified wastewater effluent was discharged at the upland edge of the riparian zone, providing a continuous source of N to the riparian zone. Denitrification rates were significantly higher in poorly drained soils adjacent to the high-N effluent than in well drained soils, and rates in A horizon soils were significantly higher than in B and C horizon soils. Denitrification rates in the well drained soils were typically below detection limits, indicating that areas of the riparian zone were hydrologically isolated from the high-N source.
