Dicção lírica do português brasileiro: questões aplicadas às Oito canções populares brasileiras de José Siqueira

This article discusses the application of the Normas para a Pronúncia do Português Brasileiro no Canto Erudito [Guidelines for Brazilian Portuguese Pronunciation in Classical Singing] published in 2007, to Oito Canções Populares Brasileiras by Paraiban composer José Siqueira (1907-1985). Given that these songs, like Siqueira’s entire body of work, possess a strong regional character, we believe adaptations to the guidelines are necessary. We propose a pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese that we believe enhances credibility, authenticity, and expressiveness to the performance of these songs. This article is also a conscious effort to combat linguistic prejudice and the stigmatization of linguistic varieties that are often considered incorrect or inappropriate.
