Abstract

Malingering is a mental health construct that has three distinct yet equally critical components: 1) intentional deception, 2) feigning or exaggeration of symptoms, and 3) external motivation. Each of these components presents its own set of difficult challenges for clinicians. This chapter will discuss issues related to the conceptualization and accurate assessment of malingering.
