Abstract
The rat sciatic nerve model was employed to evaluate collagen and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) used for peripheral nerve regeneration. The collagen tubule (CT)/linked-BDNF repair group demonstrated a statistically significant superior functional recovery compared to epineural coaptation (EC). Moreover CT/pumped-BDNF showed enhanced functional recovery compared to CT and EC. The CT/linked-BDNF repair group showed the largest mean axon diameters proximal and distal to the repair site. Repair groups that included both collagen tubulization and BDNF delivery improved the rate and the degree to which recovery of sciatic function occurs after nerve transection and repair.
