Abstract

During a study of possible abnormalities in γglobin gene arrangements in Japanese newborns (1) we discovered one baby (γ233) with an abnormal γ chain that was present for about 36%; this observation was made when the cord blood lysate was analyzed by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (2) (Fig. 1). Structural analysis showed that this abnormal T chain had a His+Tyr substitution at position Y146; the chain was of the Gγ type. We named it Hb F-Onoda [α2Gγ2l46(HC3)HisTyr] after the name of the city where the baby was born.
