Abstract

Pathological effects of monocrotophos has been studied on the brain by exposing the fish to sublethal concentrations 1.9,4.75 and 9.5 pp.m (1/10, 1/4, 1/2 of 96-h LC50) for 21 days. The histopathological changes were found to be dose dependent. The pesticide produced rupture of cortex, atrophy of molecular and granular layer, necrosis of neurofibrillar region, vascular dilation, nuclear pyknosis, fibrosis, vacuolation, cerebral oedema and interzonal detachment. Such changes may affect the proper survival of the fish in its aquatic environment.
