Abstract

Constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) are both chronic bowel disorders with relapsing and overlapping symptoms. They are part of a group of digestive disorders often referred to as functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Unlike many other diseases, they are characterized by altered bowel function, hence the term functional; however, in contrast to organic disorders (ie, Crohn’s disease), they lack specific biomarkers that can be measured in blood, mucosa, or stool.
