Knowledge representation in NST-EXPERT

Abstract

The assessment of fetal status in high-risk pregnancies requires the application of different antenatal tests, with the non-stress test (NST) being the most commonly performed. The NST is based on interpretation of the resting fetal heart rate (FHR) tracing, and attempts to relate the baseline FHR patterns to a prediction of fetal health. The authors describe the way knowledge is represented within NST-EXPERT, an expert system designed to interpret the NST to suggest appropriate therapy, and to predict fetal outcome. The system uses a mixed rule/frame structure to represent, respectively, inferential and factual knowledge.
