Abstract

Cognitive Radio is an emerging innovative network technology developed to solve the imbalance between spectrum scarcity and spectrum under utilization. Due to legacy spectrum allocation, majority of the allocated spectrum bands are left unused by the licensed users. This vacant or unused spectrum bands by their licensed users can be utilized by the cognitive users using this cognitive radio technology and therefore increase the overall spectrum utilization. In this paper an advanced energy detection approach based on M-ary QAM is used for spectrum sensing. The proposed sensing technique is tested under diverse channel conditions and environments. Testing and verification of the proposed technique is done by obtaining the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curves. The accuracy of the system is checked by analysing Probability of Detection 'Pd' and Complimentary ROC curves for Probability of Missed Detection 'Pmd'. The proposed technique is further tested over different fadins channels with varying Signal to Noise Ratio.
