Abstract
Abstract Lidocaine ointment applied topically to gingivae of vital teeth with exposed dentin caused acute, severe pain. Measurement of the osmotic pressure of the ointment revealed that it was very hypertonic, due mainly to the high concentration of polyethylene glycol vehicle. The results support the hydrodynamic theory of dentin sensitivity.
