N2 - To the Editor: In a previous communication from this laboratory paniculate matter that had been generated in polyvinyl chloride intravenous bags containing physiologic saline solution was counted and identified as the plasticizer, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP).1 Darby and Ausman, after assuming unit density and an average diameter of 2 μm for the 20,000 spheres per milliliter counted, calculated that the concentration of the plasticizer would be approximately 0.1 ppm in a shaken bag.2 An extraction and spectrophotometric assay procedure has recently been developed in our laboratories to determine microquantities of DEHP. Using this new assay procedure, we measured the quantities. No extract is available for articles shorter than 400 words.
