Abstract

Detection of severe thyroid failure in patients with multisystem manifestations of this hypometabolic syndrome can lead to rewarding therapeutic response. In this article, the clinical and laboratory findings, caveats for treatment, and historical perspectives of profound hypothyroidism are reviewed. Eight cases of profound hypothyroidism from one physician's practice are also highlighted.
