Abstract
To the Editor: Your views on Laetrile are infuriating (N Engl J Med 296:1167–1168, 1977). How can you support the use of a quack nostrum? How can you advocate a placebo to replace proper supportive counseling? Aren't you, like many other physicians, hiding behind a prescription pad when strong psychologic involvement is indicated? Furthermore, drugs are not to be put on the market and then tested, like thalidomide and chloramphenicol. To allow or advocate the use of Laetrile before it is proved safe and effective is the acme of hypocrisy when, for trivial reasons, safe and effective drugs such.
