Abstract
Aging affects most cells, organisms, and species and is associated with cellular senescence. Cellular senescence inhibits cell proliferation, resulting in irreversible growth arrest, and impairs survival. Susceptibility to various chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and neurological diseases increases with aging. Although remarkable progress has been made over the last few decades, our understanding of the aging process is imperfect. Important players in the aging field are telomeres and their regulators. Telomeres not only play an important role in the aging process but have also been linked to a plethora of diseases and conditions unfavorable to health. In this chapter, we will discuss our current understanding of telomere biology and its relation to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
