Abstract
The biomedical research in dentistry generates an important extent of scientific evidence that improves the present schemes of treatment of oral diseases in man. This review tries to introduce the reader to understand the new concepts of the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and present the advances in the process of diagnosis and their repercussions in the conventional treatment of this disease.
