Abstract

Transcranial Doppler (TCD) was performed on 124 anemic children (age 3-18 years, mean 7.8 ± 4), primarily with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The goal was to determine the relative influence of age and hematocrit on intracranial blood velocities as measured by TCD. In contrast to children without anemia, arterial velocities were higher and were significantly correlated with hematocrit but not with age. These findings indicate that knowledge of the hematocrit is necessary when interpreting TCD findings in children with SCA, and probably in young patients with anemia from any cause.
