Abstract
A 29-year-old woman presented to her local physician complaining of heavy and prolonged menses. Physical examination revealed prominent pulsation in the vaginal fornices and a 16-week size uterus. Pelvic arteriogram showed an extensive uterine arteriovenous malformation. Selective arterial embolization, occlusion of both internal iliac arteries with balloon catheters, and hysterectomy were used to treat the patient. This is the first case report to describe preoperative use of selective arterial embolization and placement of occlusive balloon catheters before hysterectomy in a woman with an arteriovenous malformation of the uterus.
