Abstract

Art therapy as related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act helps children with special needs function effectively in school and at home. To maximize the potential of art therapy, it is important for an art therapist to use interventions that are validated by scientific research. This study examined the effectiveness of an antecedent art intervention on reduction of off-task behavior for a three-year-old child with autism. A single case reversal design was used to show that one-on-one art instruction occurring prior to large-group instructional sessions produced decreased levels of off-task behavior when compared to baseline conditions. The results support previous antecedent-based interventions by demonstrating the efficacy of an individualized art task as a procedure for reducing problem behavior.
