Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of critical elements related to ethics and supervision. First, a concise overview of ethical issues related to counseling and supervision is outlined. Emphasis is placed on ethical supervisory issues described within the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics. Significant revisions within the ACA Code of Ethics include reference to supervision, and this chapter highlights these changes to facilitate understanding of ethical decision making in supervision. It is important to acknowledge that state licensing boards provide their own unique standards of practice for counselors and supervisors, and there are ethical codes regarding supervision for other mental health professionals, including psychologists and social workers. However, the discussion of various state licensing boards and the ethical codes of conduct for multiple professions is beyond the scope of this chapter.
