The topic of multiple pregnancy as a complication of ovarian stimulation was discussed at a meeting in Washington on November 19, 1999. The meeting was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the newly established Bertarelli Foundation. The latter is a newly established foundation, based in Switzerland, that aims to promote and improve the understanding of the many dimensions of reproductive health. The board of directors reads like a who’s who in the reproductive sciences. Apparently, summary measures for ART occupied a significant portion of that meeting. One of the prime movers for locating the initial meeting on this specific topic in the United States is someone who firmly believes that individuals can make a difference—Eli Adashi. Doctor Adashi is the conscience of us all. He feels that the United States should lead the way in these matters and is determined to change human nature for the better. He knows that improving the technology will be for naught if human nature stays the same. Show biz is about illusion, but ART doesn’t have to be.
