Abstract
We recently identified several novel transcripts encoding soluble and secreted isoforms of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/ErbB family members. The EGFR/ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases has been implicated in the control of cell growth and differentiation in normal tissues, and the genes encoding these receptors are frequently rearranged and/or overexpressed in a variety of carcinomas. Here, previously published assays useful for the detection of soluble EGFR/ErbB receptor isoforms in human body fluids are briefly reviewed, and results using these assays to analyze sera from breast and ovarian cancer patients are summarized. Together, these results suggest that soluble EGFR/ErbB receptor isoforms are naturally occurring in human circulation, and that they may have clinical utility as both prognostic or diagnostic serum biomarkers in breast and ovarian cancer patients.
