Lessons Learned: Life in Neurosurgery

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

In this chapter, Dr. Vale discusses lessons he learned throughout his life in neurosurgery. He discusses the importance on honesty, vitality of proper communication, necessity of mentors, how to deal with setbacks, and commitment required to be a neurosurgeon. It is vital to remember that knowledge alone is not equal to competence. We must learn to apply knowledge to become wiser. In fact, judgment is incredibly difficult to teach and requires a combination of experience, knowledge, and awareness of one's surroundings.
