Abstract
Although private mental health systems experienced the impact of managed care earlier and with more widespread infiltration, public mental health services are also evolving to be responsive to these healthcare changes. The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) has reconfigured its services and delivery systems to take advantage of several administrative developments that have occurred contemporaneously with the prodigious advances in pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for persons with serious mental illness. The changes that have been made and their impact on the ability to provide optimum patient care are described in this article.
