Abstract
Fulminant meningococcemia remains one of the most frightening and lethal of infections, capable of resulting in death within hours. Reports of the use of plasmapheresis in a few patients with the syndrome prompted us to utilize that technique recently in a severely ill patient. Improvement correlated with dropping plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF) and of interleukin 1-beta (IL-1), suggesting a possible rationale for such treatment.
