Abstract

Our ultimate purpose then is not so much to provide a defence of mercenarism, but to attack a certain kind of anti-mercenarism, underpinned by that Machiavellian virtu, which extols inter alia the virtues of a citizen's willing subordination of his or her personal interest to the communal good.
